About the Project
Embarking on my freshman year of college, I made the decision to live with a complete stranger, driven by the desire to break free from the familiar and embrace the unknown. This decision, often seen as a rite of passage, is rooted in the belief that college is a time for exploration and self-discovery. My previous encounters with strangers as temporary roommates at summer camps had left me yearning for more shared experiences, making the prospect of a year-long arrangement seem like the perfect opportunity to delve into the uncharted territory of cohabitation.

The initial optimism surrounding my decision quickly gave way to a nuanced reality. The first day of moving into the dorm brought a sense of camaraderie, but as the weeks unfolded, the true colors of our compatibility – or rather, the lack thereof – became increasingly evident. It became apparent that the romanticized idea of living with a stranger for a year was not as idyllic as many painted it to be.

Our room transformed into a microcosm of contrasting lifestyles, with personal space, cleanliness, and daily routines emerging as points of contention. The clash of preferences in our limited shared space highlighted the challenges inherent in forging a harmonious living arrangement with someone devoid of an existing history. What initially seemed like a grand opportunity for friendship morphed into an intricate dance of asserting individual preferences.

The challenges I faced weren’t unique, as tales from friends who also opted for stranger roommates echoed similar grievances. From stories of stalking and theft to roommates with blatant disregard for boundaries, the shared struggles illuminated the darker side of living with strangers. It raised the question of why individuals persist in choosing this path despite the prevalence of negative experiences.
In hindsight, my decision to embrace the unfamiliarity of living with a stranger marked a significant juncture in my college journey. The allure of meeting new people and venturing beyond my comfort zone drew me into an experiment that, while initially optimistic, evolved into a winding road of unexpected challenges. The clash of lifestyles and conflicting attitudes toward personal space unveiled a complex reality often overshadowed by idealized notions of collegiate exploration.

This project, born from the need to share my frustrations and offer a cautionary perspective, stands as a testament to the intricacies of cohabitating with strangers. It’s a candid portrayal of the highs and lows, providing a realistic guide for those contemplating a similar path. It serves as a reminder that while the journey of self-discovery is inherent to college life, the shared spaces we inhabit play a crucial role in shaping our narratives, presenting both opportunities for growth and the potential for unexpected challenges.
